Loews Tower East

1232 3rd Ave.

Upper East Side

(closed 2010)

The Loews Tower East opened in 1962.  Even though it changed to The Loews 72nd Street, it became known for decades as “Tower East.”  When entering from the street you are on the balcony level, where you would descend a staircase to the main theater. It was designed with the intent to have movie goers wait outside inline, thus many photos of the theater entrance were obscured by waiting movie goers.  It was the last single screen theater in NYC. Closing in Dec. 2010, the last movie was a political thriller “Fair Game.”  The Upper East Side, neighborhood loved the Tower East When it played any upscale type of film.  It’s now an Anthropology store.
