The Gemini

1210 2nd Ave.

Gold Coast

(closed 2012)

Opening as the UA Columbia I &II in Oct of 1971, it was renamed The Gemini Twin Cinemas I &II in 1978.  It was considered one of the better twin cinemas built at the time, each theater had 500 seats.  One theater over the other.  The downstairs had the look and feel of single-screen theater with luxurious drapes and a stage.  The upstairs auditorium was not as nice but was better than most.  The theater was thought to have reached its zenith with the Premiere of “Bugsy.” Some that came included Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Tom Cruise, Liza Minnelli, and Joan Rivers. The staff especially adored Liza who always tipped the candy staff $20, telling them they worked harder than anyone else.   It closed in Oct. 2012 and as of 2021 it was a plastic surgery clinic.
