The Ziegfeld
141 W.54th
Theater District
The Ziegfeld Theater closed in 2016 due to dwindling attendance driven by fewer premiers and competition from multi-screen theaters. The final movie to play at the Ziegfeld was on Jan. 28, 2016 “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
Known for its sumptuous red carpeting, gold trim, crystal chandeliers, and elaborate fixtures, it featured 825 main floor seats with 306 in the balcony. It was the last of the “movie palaces” showing films in NYC. It has since been remodeled as an event center. If you look closely, you’ll see a an artist license glass elevator across the street like the elevator scene in the “Towering Inferno.”
